Michael’s Story
My father was an entrepreneur and Artist. He was a very fine Sculpture. When I was young I would hang out with him in his downstairs studio and carve from his leftover plaster pieces. So plaster has been in my life for some time. Strangely it's somehow followed me... or I it.
I was trained in Wet Plastering and have worked in the construction and design industry since the Mid 1990s. I learnt the traditional plastering methods, restoring some of Sydney's most iconic homes and historical buildings in natural limes and plasters.
Studying sculpture for a year in the early 2000s with one of Australia's most iconic sculptures the late Tom Bass, learning model making from clay and once again plaster and understanding form, light and texture.
In 2010, I then trained in Vicenza, Italy in the traditional Italian wall finishes, Stucco Venezianos and polished finishes.
“Whilst travelling here and overseas I'm always inspired. The interiors and exterior walls tell a unique story to every building.
“Walls surround us and protect us. But they should also evoke a sense of comfort and warmth.”
2014-2016 Living in Portugal working on restoration buildings and learning Adobe techniques and Moroccan finishes from North Africa which still inspire my techniques and ideas here in Australia.
“I’m always looking for inspiration. It may come from the last layers of lime plaster falling from an ancient building to a beautiful textured wallpaper print. I never stop looking... There is beauty all around us!’”
